Frequently Asked Questions

Yale groups that support the functions of the university can request a development site to explore the platform or begin building. Your dev site is a private space—only accessible to those with the direct URL—so you can learn, experiment, and build at your own pace. When you’re ready to for your site to be made public, you’ll be able to go-live and share your site with the world. Request a YaleSite

Please note that all requests are subject to approval by the Office of Public Affairs and Communications (OPAC).

Web accessibility ensures that websites and content are usable by everyone, including individuals with disabilities. It involves designing and developing content so that all users can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with it effectively.

To assist you in creating accessible content, YaleSites has integrated Editoria11y, a tool developed by Princeton. After saving your page, Editoria11y analyzes your content and provides suggestions for improvements, helping you identify and correct common accessibility issues.

We also offer regular accessibility trainings to help you learn best practices and feel confident creating content that works for all users.

We’ve intentionally designed the platform to keep the code clean, consistent, and fully aligned with university accessibility and web standards. That means custom CSS isn’t supported—but the good news is, we take care of all the behind-the-scenes styling for you. This helps ensure your site looks great, works well for everyone, and stays up to date with best practices—so you can focus on your content without worrying about the tech.

Site analytics help you track your website’s performance, including accessibility, SEO, and content quality. YaleSites provides access to Siteimprove, a tool that gives you insights to improve and monitor your site. To get started, simply email yalesites@yale.edu with your site’s name and URL.

The YaleSites platform is available to Yale schools, departments, research labs and centers, and other units that support the functions of the university. However, there are some exceptions.

Departments and units at the Yale School of Medicine (which the exception of MB&B) are not eligible for YaleSites. This includes faculty lab websites. If you are affiliated with the School of Medicine, please contact the YSM Web Group at ysm.editor@yale.edu to learn more about their web services.

Student organizations are also not eligible for YaleSites. However, all registered student organizations have access to a YaleConnect webpage, and CampusPress is available for both organizational and personal web publishing.

When you are finished with development, submit a Go-Live Request to share your new YaleSite with the world. While your development environment will still be available to you after your site has been launched, any further changes can be made directly on the live site.
