View Block

What is a content block? Content blocks are pre-designed components that allow you to display and customize content on your website. The YaleSites platform offers a variety of blocks to meet different content needs.

View All Blocks

At a basic level, the View Block can quickly add dynamic Post, Event, Page and Profile feeds to your site.

While the View Block features a variety of settings and options, you’re only required to provide an Administrative Label, select the content type to show, and how you would like it displayed.

  • Optional View Heading displays above your feed
  • Show a feed of Posts, Events, Pages, or Profiles
  • Easily adjust how your feed is sorted
  • Refine Views by terms

When combined with tags, View empowers you to create and display groups of dynamically updated content on your website.

Example: You want to build a Resources section. During Setup, apply a ‘resources’ tag to each Resource page. To create a Resources landing page, add a View Block, select Pages, and opt only to include content that uses the term ‘resources.’ Your landing page will automatically update whenever you publish a new page using the ‘resources’ tag.

View Block Options

For each of the four content types, you can choose to display a Grid, List or Condensed view. A Directory Grid is also available for Profiles.

Field Display Options allow you to customize visibility of the categories, tags and thumbnails, while the Exposed Filter Options enable users to search by name or filter by category. Internal Filters allow even more control over which content is displayed.

  • Show content that uses certain tags or categories
  • Include or exclude terms
  • sort profiles by last name
  • decide how many items to display
  • ignore a set number of results

The view block is customizable to fit the layout and display preferences of your page.

View Examples

Below are examples of the view block being used on this page.

Pages Grid

This view of pages displays the content as a grid, sorted by Title A-Z. The tags and category Field Display Options have been enabled and are listed under the title of the page. Given the amount of pages on this website, the view has been set to pagination after three items.

Posts Condensed

In this example of a Posts View, the content is displayed in a condensed format. This layout works well for pages that already contain a large amount of media, or when multiple content items need to be presented in a smaller area.

Events List

This view displays a list of future events tagged with “Upcoming Trainings”. By adding this display option, any events that are created with this tag will automatically populate in the view.

Tips and Tricks

  • Plan: Organize your content before you begin building and consider what is relevant to the target audience of each page. This will help you apply tags accordingly.
  • Experiment: Try out the different display options to determine which design works best for your page layout.
