Archiving Your Website

What does Archiving mean?

When a YaleSite is no longer actively maintained, it needs to be removed from our active hosting platform. Your site’s content is never permanently lost.

Before any site is removed, the YaleSites team saves all files, the codebase, and the database.

Archiving removes your site from active hosting. The site will no longer be accessible at its URL, but everything is preserved in deep storage.

Talk to your stakeholders

Before archiving, identify who was invested in the site and give them a heads up.

Consider:

  • Does anyone need to approve the decision?
  • Does anyone need content (text, images, files) saved for their records?
  • Do partner organizations or related offices need to be notified?
  • Is there concern or pushback to address before moving forward?

Checklist

  •  Communicate with stakeholders
  •  Save and distribute any content stakeholders need
  •  Fill out the site archiving form to confirm that the site is ready to be archived

Need your site to remain accessible at its current URL?

Preserving Yale’s Digital Legacy

The Digital Expericence Team is implementing a structured approach to web archiving by identifying outdated websites for deletion with backup preservation. This initiative represents just one facet of Yale’s comprehensive digital preservation ecosystem, which includes the Web Archiving Working Group’s university-wide coordination and specialized collections that together safeguard the institution’s digital heritage for future generations.
